| May 21 2008: Bioproduction Industry Workshop: Establishing a Research Agenda in Bioproduction |
|
On May 21 2008, UC Berkeley held its second major Bioproduction Workshop, examining critical issues in Biopharmaceutical Operations. The workshop brought together over 80 representatives from industry and academia to develop a research agenda for biopharmaceutical operations.
Pat Yang, Executive Vice President of Product Operations at Genentech, was the keynote speaker at the conference.
Information about the leadup to this workshop was published in the College of Engineering's quarterly mazagine in an article entitled 'Re-engineering Bioproduction'.

The University of California at Berkeley’s Center for Biopharmaceutical Operations partners with Industrial and Government organizations to advance the art and practice of biopharmaceutical production operations and logistics.
The Center brings together world-class, interdisciplinary academic researchers with diverse industrial experience and operations managers and engineers in the biopharmaceutical industry.
CBO focuses on specific, critical issues facing this industry with the aim of developing practical methodologies, measures, and tools to improve operations. Researchers, managers, and engineers collaborate to design and implement more cost-effective and reliable production systems and supply-chains for manufacturing and distributing safe and effective drugs. |

Newly Established Course in Spring 2008 to develop a research agenda in Biotechnology Operations
In December 2007, the University of California at Berkeley announced the establishment of a new course to tighten focus on critical issues in the biotech industry. This course builds on the Bioproduction Forum held in Fall 2007, and is designed to set the research agenda on operational issues relating to biotechnology manufacture.
This project class is highly competitive and will involve extensive industry and academic involvement. A $1000 prize will be awarded to the best team of the semester. No previous biotech experience is necessary, and there are no pre-requisites.

Bioproduction Forum featured in Bioprocess International
Bioprocess International featured an article in January about the Bioproduction Forum's findings, entitled 'Establishing a Research Agenda in Bioproduction'.

Bioproduction Forum Outreach
On Dec 7 2007, Genentech will host a special session of the Bioproduction Forum on their South San Fransisco campus. This lunchtime forum will discuss the subject of simulation and its role in model building. The presentation will be broadcast in all of Genentech's locations, including both Vacaville and Oceanside sites.

| Bioproduction Forum |
In Fall 2007, the University of California at Berkeley formally recognized the need for further research in biopharmaceutical operations with the establishment of a forum for operational issues in biopharmaceuticals. The forum is problem focused, drawing from industry expert speakers to understand current operations issues facing the Biopharmaceutical industry. Speakers in Fall 2007 included VPs and Senior VPs from Bayer and Genentech - the two largest biopharmaceutical manufacturers in the Bay Area – as well as the ex-CSO of Celera Genomics, ex-VP of Process Development at Chiron, and 10 other experts in their respective fields.
The Fall 2007 Bioproduction Forum attracted over 50 students and professors from eight different departments, including Bioengineering, Biophysics, Industrial Engineering, Economics and Biochemistry – making it one of the most strongly inter-disciplinary courses on campus.

| Bioproduction Project Course |
| In this highly competitive project course, teams of interdisciplinary students will collaborate together to outline the issues in one specific area of the Biotech industry. Working closely with extensive Industry and Academic support, teams will formulate questions which will be considered by an Industry-wide workshop in May 2008. The aim will be to establish a set of research questions and initial approaches which are practical and interesting to both academia and industry. This course has support from over a dozen industry mentors from leading Biotech companies in the Bay Area such as Genentech, Bayer and Biomarin.

| Bioproduction Workshop |
On February 16th and 17th 2006, the IEOR department hosted a National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop on Biomanufacturing and Logistics Systems. The objective of this workshop was to bring together Bay Area representatives from academia, the biopharmaceutical industry, and other interested contributors to develop a manufacturing and logistics systems research agenda for biomanufacturing.
The second workshop, to be held in May 2007, looks at the emerging research questions in the field given 18 months experience in industry projects at Bayer and Genentech, among other companies. The workshop aims to examine the value brought by a common body of knowledge – such as common benchmarking metrics – in this industry.
