The University of California at Berkeley’s Center for Biopharmaceutical Operations partners with Industrial and Government organizations to advance the art and practice of biopharmaceutical production operations and logistics.
The Center brings together world-class, interdisciplinary academic researchers with diverse industrial experience and operations managers and engineers in the biopharmaceutical industry.
CBO focuses on specific, critical issues facing this industry with the aim of developing practical methodologies, measures, and tools to improve operations. Researchers, managers, and engineers collaborate to design and implement more cost-effective and reliable production systems and supply-chains for manufacturing and distributing safe and effective drugs. |

CBO speaks at closing session of EuroBiO 2008
Rick Johnston was one of six panelists at the closing session of the EuroBiO 2008 conference held in Paris, France in October 2008.
EuroBiO brought together over one hundred internationally renowned speakers along with 5,000 delegates and 500 companies and clusters to discuss the future of biotech in Europe and around the World. It was officially designated the EU Presidency Life Sciences Event for 2008. Rick spoke at length on the need for greater research into Operations and the need for increased Academic – Industry collaboration.

CBO appears in Fierce Biotech
When the UC-Berkeley Center for Biopharmaceutical Operations opens next year, its founders plan to find more efficient methods to manufacture biologics. And their goal is to make biotech drugs less expensive while ensuring a reliable supply of the therapies. Bayer Healthcare and Genentech have already signed on as supporters of the center, and the founders plan to approach other biotech companies in the San Francisco area to gauge their willingness to get involved as well.
"It's not sufficient to hire a bunch of people in manufacturing to look at these problems," acting co-director Rick Johnston tells the East Bay Business Times. "Biotech issues are complex. You really need to have academics look at a problem and say, ‘You know what? That's similar to a problem that we solved 10 years ago in the semiconductor industry.' "

| Bioproduction Forum |
In Fall 2007, the University of California at Berkeley formally recognized the need for further research in biopharmaceutical operations with the establishment of a forum for operational issues in biopharmaceuticals. The forum is problem focused, drawing from industry expert speakers to understand current operations issues facing the Biopharmaceutical industry. Speakers in Fall 2007 included VPs and Senior VPs from Bayer and Genentech - the two largest biopharmaceutical manufacturers in the Bay Area – as well as the ex-CSO of Celera Genomics, ex-VP of Process Development at Chiron, and 10 other experts in their respective fields.
The Fall 2007 Bioproduction Forum attracted over 50 students and professors from eight different departments, including Bioengineering, Biophysics, Industrial Engineering, Economics and Biochemistry – making it one of the most strongly inter-disciplinary courses on campus.
|
| Bioproduction Project Course |
| In this highly competitive project course, teams of interdisciplinary students will collaborate together to outline the issues in one specific area of the Biotech industry. Working closely with extensive Industry and Academic support, teams will formulate questions which will be considered by an Industry-wide workshop in May 2008. The aim will be to establish a set of research questions and initial approaches which are practical and interesting to both academia and industry. This course has support from over a dozen industry mentors from leading Biotech companies in the Bay Area such as Genentech, Bayer and Biomarin.
|
| Bioproduction Workshop |
On February 16th and 17th 2006, the IEOR department hosted a National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop on Biomanufacturing and Logistics Systems. The objective of this workshop was to bring together Bay Area representatives from academia, the biopharmaceutical industry, and other interested contributors to develop a manufacturing and logistics systems research agenda for biomanufacturing.
The second workshop, to be held in May 2007, looks at the emerging research questions in the field given 18 months experience in industry projects at Bayer and Genentech, among other companies. The workshop aims to examine the value brought by a common body of knowledge – such as common benchmarking metrics – in this industry.
